What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? The Complete Guide
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside AI-written answers. Here is what it is, how it works, and a step-by-step way to start.
Table of contents
Short answer: generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business mentioned, recommended and cited inside answers written by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. It builds on SEO: you make your site easy to crawl and quote, make your brand identity unmistakable, and earn genuine mentions on the websites AI systems trust.
The term was coined in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and collaborators, which found that some content changes, such as adding quotations, statistics and cited sources, increased visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40% in their tests. Since then, AI assistants have become a mainstream way to look things up: OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users, and Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month.
This guide explains what GEO is, how AI assistants pick sources, what actually works, what to ignore, and how to measure progress. If you want a team to do it for you, see our AI search optimization service.
What is generative engine optimization, in plain English?
A "generative engine" is any tool that writes an answer instead of just listing links. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best accounting software for a small agency?" or asks Google "how do I fix a leaking boiler?", the tool reads sources and writes a summary, often naming a few businesses and linking to a few pages.
GEO is everything you do to be one of those named businesses and linked pages. It is sometimes called:
- AEO (answer engine optimization): an older term focused on answering questions directly, originally for featured snippets and voice assistants. See what AEO is and how it differs.
- AI SEO or LLM SEO: informal names for the same work.
- AI search optimization: the umbrella term we use for our service.
You can look up the short definitions of GEO and AEO in our glossary.
How is GEO different from SEO?
GEO and SEO overlap more than most "GEO experts" admit. Google itself says that, from its perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, because its AI features are grounded in its core search ranking systems. The differences are about emphasis, not a new rulebook.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of results | Be named, recommended or cited inside an AI answer |
| Main unit | Pages and keywords | Brands (entities), facts and quotable passages |
| Key signals | Relevance, links, content quality, technical health | Everything SEO needs, plus brand mentions across the web, consistency and clarity |
| Where you win | Your own pages | Your pages and other people's pages (reviews, press, forums, lists) |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Mention rate, citation rate, accuracy of descriptions, AI referral traffic |

How do AI assistants choose which sources to use?
No AI company publishes a ranking formula, but the mechanics are well understood. AI answers come from two places.
1. Live retrieval (search, then summarize)
Most assistants now search the web when a question needs current or specific information. Google describes two techniques for AI Overviews and AI Mode:
- Retrieval-augmented generation (grounding): the system retrieves relevant pages from the search index and writes an answer based on them, with links.
- Query fan-out: the model runs several related searches at once. A question about "fixing a weedy lawn" might also search for herbicides, chemical-free methods and prevention.
ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude work in a similar way using their own or partner search indexes. The practical lesson: if your page doesn't rank or can't be crawled, it is unlikely to be retrieved and cited.
2. Model memory (training data)
When an assistant answers without searching, it relies on patterns it learned from a huge amount of text. Brands that are mentioned often, consistently and positively across reputable sources are more likely to come up. You can't edit a model's memory directly; you can only become more widely and accurately described across the web, which future models learn from.
Our explainer on how ChatGPT chooses which businesses to recommend walks through both paths with examples.
Why does GEO matter for businesses now?
Three trends make GEO worth doing in 2026:
- Usage is mainstream. ChatGPT alone has passed 900 million weekly users (OpenAI, early 2026). Google's AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion monthly users.
- Clicks are shifting. A Pew Research Center study of real browsing data found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. If you're not in the summary, you get fewer chances to be seen. Our guide to how AI Overviews affect traffic covers what to do about it.
- Buyers ask AI for shortlists. Questions like "best family dentist near me" or "which CRM is best for a 10-person agency" increasingly start in an assistant. If you aren't on the shortlist, you're invisible at the moment of decision.
What actually works in GEO? A 7-step framework
Step 1: Fix the SEO foundations
AI systems that search the web need to find, crawl and trust your pages. Make sure your important pages are indexed, load quickly, work on mobile and are not blocked by robots.txt. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in its AI features. A technical SEO checklist is the right place to start.
Step 2: Make your brand an unmistakable entity
AI systems need to be confident about who you are, what you do and where you operate.
- Use the same name, description, services, location and contact details everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, directories and review sites.
- Write one clear sentence that describes you, and reuse it. For example: "MangoGrow is a digital growth agency that helps businesses get found on Google, AI assistants and social media."
- Add Organization (or LocalBusiness) structured data with
sameAslinks to your official profiles. - Keep a detailed About page with your history, people and specialities.
Step 3: Let the right crawlers in
If an AI company's crawler can't read your site, its assistant can't cite you. The main ones are OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, Anthropic's ClaudeBot family, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot (which powers AI Overviews). Our guide to allowing or blocking AI crawlers explains each one and the trade-offs.
Step 4: Publish non-commodity, answer-first content
Google's 2026 guidance on generative AI search is blunt: content that is "unique, compelling, and useful" will influence your visibility more than any trick. It contrasts commodity content (generic tips anyone could write) with non-commodity content (first-hand experience and expert takes).
In practice, every important page should:
- Answer the question in the first two or three sentences, then go deeper.
- Use question-style headings that mirror how people ask.
- Include specifics: prices, timelines, comparisons, steps, examples and named sources. The original GEO research found that adding statistics, quotations and citations made content more visible in AI answers.
- Show who is behind it: author or team, experience, and date updated.
See how to write content that AI search engines cite for a full template.
Step 5: Earn mentions where AI looks
This is where GEO differs most from on-page SEO. AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources: review platforms, "best of" lists, news, industry publications, Reddit and forums, and YouTube. The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey by Whitespark summed it up: for AI visibility, "mentions are the new links."
Focus on genuine mentions:
- Collect steady, detailed reviews on Google and your industry's main review site. See how reviews affect SEO and AI recommendations.
- Offer useful data or expert comment to journalists and industry newsletters.
- Get listed accurately in respected directories and associations.
- Take part honestly in communities where your customers ask questions. Our article on why Reddit matters for AI search covers how to do this without spamming.
Google explicitly warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not helpful, and fake reviews are illegal in the US and UK. Earn them.
Step 6: Cover local and shopping details
If you sell locally, a complete Google Business Profile feeds both Maps and AI answers. If you sell products, accurate product data (for example via Google Merchant Center feeds or ChatGPT's merchant programme) helps your products appear in AI shopping answers. See how local businesses get recommended by AI assistants and ChatGPT shopping optimization.
Step 7: Measure and iterate
GEO without measurement is guesswork. Track three things:
- A prompt set. List 30 to 100 real questions customers ask, from "what is…" to "best [service] in [city]" to "[you] vs [competitor]". Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google. Record whether you're mentioned, linked, and described accurately.
- Platform reports. Google Search Console now has a generative AI performance report showing impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing citations in Copilot.
- AI referral traffic in your analytics (visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar).
Our guide to tracking your brand's visibility in AI search includes a free tracking template.
What can you safely ignore?
A lot of GEO advice online is speculation. Google's own guidance lists several things you don't need for Google's AI features:
- llms.txt and other "AI text files". Google Search doesn't use them. They're harmless and some other tools read them, but they're not a ranking lever. More in what llms.txt is.
- "Chunking" pages into tiny pieces for AI. There's no ideal page length.
- Rewriting content "for AI" or stuffing every keyword variant. AI systems understand synonyms.
- Special schema markup for AI. Structured data is useful for rich results and clarity, but there is no AI-only markup. See schema markup for AI search.
- Mass-producing pages for every possible question. Google treats that as scaled content abuse.
How much does GEO cost?
Costs depend on how much content, digital PR and technical work you need. As a rough guide, GEO is usually sold either as an add-on to an SEO retainer or as a standalone monthly retainer. Our GEO pricing guide breaks down typical price ranges and what should be included, and how to choose a GEO agency lists the questions to ask before you sign.
A 90-day GEO starter plan
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Baseline | Prompt set of 30–100 questions; record current mentions and competitors |
| 2–4 | Foundations | Technical fixes, crawler access, consistent business details, Organization schema |
| 3–8 | Content | Rewrite top 10 pages answer-first; publish 4–8 genuinely useful articles on your buyers' biggest questions |
| 4–12 | Mentions | Review requests, directory clean-up, 2–4 PR or partner pitches per month, community participation |
| 12 | Re-measure | Re-run the prompt set; compare mention rate, accuracy and AI referrals |
The bottom line
GEO isn't a trick or a separate discipline that replaces SEO. It's SEO done properly, plus deliberate work on your reputation across the web, written in a way that's easy for both people and AI systems to quote. Start with your foundations and your 10 most important pages, earn real mentions, and measure monthly.

Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for in marketing?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the practice of making your business more likely to be mentioned, recommended and cited in answers written by generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Most AI assistants that search the web retrieve pages from search indexes, so strong SEO is the foundation of GEO. GEO adds extra focus on brand mentions across the web, entity consistency and content that is easy to quote.
How long does GEO take to work?
Assistants that search the web live can reflect improvements within weeks once your pages are indexed and ranking. Answers that rely on a model's training data change more slowly, usually over months, as your brand earns more mentions.
Can a small business do GEO without an agency?
Yes. The basics are free: keep your business details consistent, allow AI crawlers, write clear answer-first pages, collect genuine reviews, and test a list of customer questions in AI tools each month. An agency mainly saves time and adds scale.
Is there a way to pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Organic AI answers are not for sale. Some platforms are testing clearly labelled ads, but being recommended in the answer itself depends on your reputation and content.
